Work Smart!

Chances are you either have a job or you're looking for one. Stop! How old are you? Did you know that the U.S. Department of Labor has rules that apply to workers under the ages of 18? Also, all states have child labor standards.

There's more to work than just showing up on time and doing what you're asked — although those are two very important things!

Let us help you be an informed worker. Here's some of what you need to know:

Minimum wage - As the name suggests, minimum wage is the lowest amount that any worker can be paid legally. As with any rule, however, there are exceptions to the minimum wage law. Visit the U.S. Department of Labor's Web site to learn what they are.

Safety First - Some jobs have certain safety requirements that both you and your employer will need to fulfill.

Know what your rights and responsibilities are under the law!

As a worker, you have a right to:

  • A safe & healthful workplace
  • Not work if you think you're in danger
  • Report safety hazards to your supervisor
  • Work limited hours - and only at jobs that are approved for your age group
  • Use protective gear
  • Be trained about safety
  • Be paid for your work
  • Ask for payment or medical care if you get sick/injured because of your job
  • Work without harassment

As a worker, you have the responsibility to:

  • Follow your employer's work, safety, & health rules
  • Ask questions so you'll know what to do
  • Tell your supervisor if you feel unsafe at work
  • Pay attention to your work environment (especially any changes)
